Philadelphia personal injury attorneys at the Wieand Law Firm are investigating claims for injuries and complications arising from Essure birth control, as a skilled Bayer Essure lawsuit attorney. Essure is a medical device designed for permanent female sterilization that was developed as an alternative to tubal ligation, which is a major surgical procedure. The devise, approved by the FDA in 2002, was marketed as a non-surgical and minimally invasive permanent birth control implant.

The Essure device is a two inch-long metal coil that is placed in the fallopian tubes by catheter.  It contains synthetic fibers to induce fibrosis and scar tissue in order to create a physical barrier to prevent sperm from reaching the egg. The procedure does not require general anesthesia or incision.

It is estimated that 750,000 Essure devises have been sold, mostly in the United States. However, in recent years, thousands of women have reported complications requiring invasive and painful revision surgeries. To date, there have been over 12,000 adverse events reported to the FDA.

Reported Side Effects of Essure

  •    Perforation of the uterus or colon
  •    Autoimmune problems
  •    Hysterectomy
  •    Abdominal pain, cramping, bleeding
  •    Implant migration
  •    Ectopic pregnancy
  •    Fetal death
  •    Death

Despite the mounting reports of complications from the device, both the FDA and Bayer maintained that the benefits outweighed the risks. Many experts have been critical of the FDA, stating that the device was approved based on an inadequate study and did not react appropriately when made aware of the increasing safety issues.

FDA Announces Label Change for Essure
On November 14, 2016, the FDA announced a new black box warning and Patient Decision Checklist. In 2018, the FDA required that both doctor and patient sign the checklist of potential problems prior to Essure implant.
In 2017, Bayer announced that they would stop selling Essure in all countries, except the United States.
In July of 2018 Bayer announced they would be pulling Essure from the U.S. market by the end of the year. They attributed the decision to declining sales.
